unit 1 living things
perform three vital functions
nutrition: transform nutrients into energy.
interaction: living interact with their environment by means of a stimulus and a response
reproduction
Asexual: only one organism required. Ex. bacteria, plants, fungi protist
Sexual: two indivualds required, male and female. Ex: animals
are classified in kingdoms
monera: unicellular. Ex. bacteria: decomposer: feed on dead living things
plant: multicellular; they make their own food through photosynthesis (absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen)
fungus: unicellular or multicellular. decomposers: feed on dead living things Ex: Yeasts and mushrooms
animal: multicellular. They feed on other living things
protist: unicellular or multicellular. Ex: amoeba and algae
are made up of cells
animal cell
nucleus
cell membrane
cytoplasm
Red blood cells carry oxygen
vacuole
nerve cells carry nerve impulses from our brain to the rest of the body and also from our sense organs to our brain
white blood cells protect the body from bacteria, viruses and other foreing invaders
plant cell
nucleus
cell membrane
cytoplasm
cell wall
chloroplast
vacuole
root hair cells absob water and minerals
leaf cells collect sunlight for photosynthesis.
Structure order
Tissues: cells with similar structures and functions from tissues. all cells work together to perform a particulr job
organs: organs are made up of a number of tissues, which work together to carry out a particular function
system: organs which work together to perform the same function form systems.
can be
unicellular
